Traveling Without Moving: Love as an Ecstatic Union in Plotinus, Augustine, and Dante [Plotinus thought only the desire for union with the one mattered, and Augustine did not want any human attachments to take away from the desire for God. Dante, however, thought the beloved could manifest God's essence. Good love was embodied in Beatrice; bad love in Francesca da Rimini, who still was self-obsessed in hell.
